KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court (SC) has commenced the final hearing on the writ petition filed against the appointment of 110 proportional representation seats in the federal parliament.
From Wednesday, Chief Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha and Justices Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Prakashman Singh, Prakash Kumar Dhungana, and Sushmalata Mathema have jointly started the final hearing on the writ petition challenging the appointment of 110 parliamentarians.
The Assistant Spokesperson of the Supreme Court, Govinda Prasad Ghimire, informed that the hearing on the writ petition had begun from the side of the petitioner on Wednesday.
According to the constitutional provisions, 110 members were elected based on the list prepared by various parties from the election of the House of Representatives held on November 20, 2022.
Senior Advocate Balkrishna Neupane had filed the writ on January 5, 2022, stating that the party’s handling of the provisions for proportional representation was not in line with the spirit of the Constitution.
He demanded the annulment of the elected members claiming the provision failed to be inclusive and proportional, as mandated by the Constitution, with various entities such as political parties, Election Commission, Parliament Secretariat, Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
