Govt preparing to launch new tourism policy to boost sector over next decade

KATHMANDU: Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey announced that a new tourism policy is in its final stages.

Speaking to journalists today, Minister Pandey said, “No new tourism policy has been introduced since the country adopted the federal structure. The draft is in its final stage, and discussions are ongoing with stakeholders.”

He also mentioned that preparations are underway to draft a Tourism Act alongside the policy. Additionally, the Ministry is planning to celebrate the Visit Nepal Decade from 2025 to 2035.

A thematic committee within the Ministry has held its second meeting to discuss transforming the tourism sector, expanding opportunities, boosting employment, and increasing tourism’s contribution to the economy, Pandey said.

Highlighting the ongoing policy reforms, he acknowledged that while progress is being made, tangible results may take time.

The Minister also shared updates on two bills submitted to the Council of Ministers to split the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) into two separate entities – a service provider and a regulator.

Regarding Nepal Airlines Corporation, he stated that efforts are underway to address existing issues.

Plans include operating seven Twin Otter aircraft across all provinces, up from the current single Twin Otter serving all regions.
