NC leader Mahat calls for agricultural commercialization to boost self-sufficiency

DHANGADHII: Spokesperson of the Nepali Congress (NC) Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has emphasized the importance of commercializing the agriculture sector to boost production.

During an interaction organized by the NC’s Department of Supply and Consumers in Dhangadhi on Friday, Mahat asserted that enhancing agricultural output could lead to self-sufficiency.

He noted that over 60 percent of the country’s population relies on agriculture, yet their contribution to agro production is only about 25 percent.

Mahat expressed concern about the declining interest in agricultural professions and the lack of market access for farmers’ products.

Participants at the event also raised issues faced by consumers, such as having to pay excessively for essential commodities while genuine farmers struggle to receive subsidies.

They attributed these challenges to inadequate market monitoring and called for the government to prioritize production subsidies over operational costs.

The stakeholders urged the implementation of agriculture-friendly policies to elevate the sector’s status and suggested improvements to the current supply system to benefit both farmers and consumers.
