KATHMANDU: After an eight-month ban on TikTok, the government has begun preparations to lift the restriction on the short-form video hosting service owned by Chinese internet company ByteDance.
This move follows a letter from TikTok’s Singapore-based office, in which the company committed to adhering to Nepalese laws and legal processes.
Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has initiated consultations with relevant authorities to move forward with lifting the ban.
The decision to ban TikTok was made during the Council of Ministers’ meeting on November 13, citing concerns over social harmony, numerous complaints regarding public decency, and the platform’s alleged lack of cooperation in crime prevention and prosecution efforts.
TikTok’s recent letter marks the eighth time the company has requested the government of Nepal to lift the ban.
