Energy Ministry refutes report linking power cuts to India relations

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation has expressed serious concern over a news report that alleged power cuts in Nepal were a consequence of deteriorating relations with India.

The report, which featured a photo of the Prime Minister, was published by an online portal.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Chiranjeevi Chataut dismissed the claims, calling the report “fabricated and baseless.”

The Ministry said the allegations undermined the long-standing friendly relations between Nepal and India.

Clarifying the situation, the Ministry explained that domestic power generation decreases during the dry season, leading to a temporary shortfall between electricity supply and demand. To address this, Nepal imports electricity from India.

However, during periods of high domestic demand in India, electricity from India’s Energy Exchange Market may not be available during peak hours.

Despite this constraint, the Ministry assured that the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) can secure power through alternative means, including direct negotiations with Indian power trading companies, bidding processes, or through the Power Exchange Committee (PEC).

The Ministry said Nepal faces no restrictions from India on importing electricity through these channels.
