Global cyber disruption halts flights and businesses

WASHINGTON DC: Major U.S. airlines implemented ground stops due to communication issues, international news agencies reported.

Concurrently, airlines, media outlets, financial institutions, and telecommunications firms worldwide experienced disruptions in their operations, according to Reuters.

American Airlines (AAL.O), Delta Airlines (DAL.N), United Airlines (UAL.O), and Allegiant Air (ALGT.O) grounded flights shortly after Microsoft resolved a cloud services outage affecting multiple budget carriers.

It remains unclear if the flight halts were directly linked to the earlier Microsoft (MSFT.O) cloud disruption, according to reports.

In Australia, media companies, banks, and telecoms also faced outages, reportedly connected to an incident at global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike (CRWD.O).

Downdetector, a crowdsourced platform, highlighted disruptions at various banks and telecom providers.

When contacted, Crowdstrike acknowledged reports of Microsoft Windows crashes related to its Falcon sensor, although it did not specifically mention Australia.

Authorities emphasized that there was no indication that the outage resulted from a cybersecurity breach, as stated by Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator Michelle McGuinness.
