Winter rainfall retreats as westerly wind weakens

KATHMANDU: Meteorologists have stated that the westerly wind, which brought a respite from the dry weather with a rainy system entering on January 15, has once again diminished.

This signals a prolonged dry spell in the coming days, according to meteorologist Sanjeev Adhikari from the Weather Forecasting Division.

After a hiatus of one and a half months, a westerly weather system brought rain on January 15.

However, as of January 18, this system has dissipated, eliminating any possibility of rain across the country in the foreseeable future.

Attributing winter rain to the western wind, Adhikari noted a recent weakening of this wind, eliminating the possibility of rain.

“A few days ago, the likelihood of rain increased due to the partial effect of the low-pressure system around the south of Bangladesh, which supported the western wind,” he said.

Though a dry spell is anticipated, he suggested a possibility of light snowfall in certain high hills and Himalayan areas within specific provinces.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division the afternoon weather in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces is expected to range from partly cloudy to mostly clear.

There is also a chance of light snowfall in high hilly and Himalayan areas.
