KATHMANDU: In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Siraha district recorded 255 vehicle accidents resulting in 22 deaths and 457 injuries, according to data from the Traffic Police Office.

While the total number of accidents has decreased compared to the same period last fiscal year, the number of fatalities has increased.

During the first quarter of the previous fiscal year, 15 people died in road accidents. By the end of that year, Siraha witnessed 997 accidents, claiming 68 lives and injuring 1,579 people.

Chief Police Inspector of the District Traffic Office in Lahan, Poshan Raj Thapaliya, stated that despite intensified public awareness campaigns, the death rate continues to rise.

He identified major causes of accidents, including driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, overtaking, mechanical issues, speeding, overcrowded vehicles, and violations of traffic rules.

Additionally, the growing number of unregulated city rickshaws has contributed to the problem.

Thapaliya said reducing road accidents requires cooperation from all relevant stakeholders and cannot be achieved by the traffic police alone.
