Stunning Gosaikunda: A Sacred Gem of Nepal (photos)

KATHMANDU: Gosaikunda, a revered alpine lake located in Nepal’s Langtang National Park, is renowned for its profound cultural, religious, and natural significance.

Nestled at an altitude of approximately 4,380 meters, this glacial lake holds sacred status for both Hindus and Buddhists.

According to Hindu mythology, Gosaikunda was created by Lord Shiva, who thrust his trident into the ground to obtain water and soothe his throat after consuming poison to save the universe.

This divine association makes Gosaikunda a major pilgrimage destination, particularly during the Janai Purnima festival in August.

During this time, thousands of devotees from Nepal and India make the trek to bathe in its holy waters, seeking purification and blessings.

In addition to its spiritual importance, Gosaikunda is a natural wonder, surrounded by rugged mountains and offering a serene yet dramatic landscape.

The lake stands as a testament to the deep connection between nature and the divine in Nepalese culture.
