KATHMANDU: The National Assembly (NA) has given its assent to the amendment made by the House of Representatives (HoR) to the Nepal University Bill.

A meeting of the upper house of the Federal Parliament unanimously approved a proposal tabled by Minister for Education, Science and Technology Bidhya Bhattarai seeking that the upper house give its consent to the amendment by the HoR, regarding the Nepal University Bill, 2079 BS, returned to the Assembly with amendment by the lower house.

Before this, the National Assembly meeting held discussions on the amendment made by the HoR to the bill.

The lower house had passed the bill with amendment on September 9. Registered in the parliament on December 6, 2022, the bill was passed by the National Assembly on July 2, 2024.

The government had tabled the bill in the Federal Parliament deeming it necessary to establish a public university in the non-governmental sector for producing skilled, creative, industrious and competitive human resources in the country.

It is stated in the bill that the University will be a non-profit institution providing courses on multi-disciplinary studies based on inter-disciplinary concept (liberal arts).
