KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a woman on charges of defrauding individuals of Rs 3.85 million by falsely promising to send them to the United States for employment.
A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested 54-year-old Nirmala Kumari Shrestha of Rolpa and made her public on Wednesday.
According to police, Shrestha allegedly lured unemployed youths with promises of well-paying jobs in the United States and collected money from them under the pretext of arranging foreign employment opportunities.
Information Officer and Superintendent of Police Rameshwar Karki said the suspect was arrested from Teku. Investigation has revealed that she collected the amount from the victims in multiple transactions.
Police said that after receiving the money, Shrestha kept the victims waiting for a long period with various assurances and later lost contact without making any arrangements to send them abroad.
Shrestha has been handed over to the Department of Foreign Employment in Tahachal for further investigation and legal action, according to police.
