KATHMANDU: National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal emphasized the importance of developing the tourism sector to build a self-reliant economy.
He made this statement while inaugurating the 28th and 29th annual general meetings and elections of the Thamel Tourism Development Council today.
Chairman Dahal highlighted Nepal’s immense tourism potential and stressed the need to develop tourism infrastructure and publicize the country’s tourism products globally.
He described Nepal as an excellent destination for adventure tourism, mountaineering, trekking, and cultural tourism, among other areas.
He also urged the Council to further promote tourism in the Thamel area according to its tourism development master plan.
Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pandey, Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, suggested managing traffic within Thamel and improving the business environment, cleanliness, sanitation, and various tourism-related services.
Krishna Hari Sharma, Deputy Inspector General at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, underscored the importance of developing the tourism sector as a major pillar of the country’s economy.
Khyam Raj Tiwari, Chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Ward No. 26, noted that Thamel is significant to Nepal’s tourism sector, with 80% of foreign tourists visiting the area.
He called on the government to prioritize Thamel and develop a concrete plan for the tourism sector.
Ram Prasad Sapkota, Vice-Chairman of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), urged all stakeholders to work together to systematize and promote tourism in Thamel.
He assured that NTB would actively promote Nepal’s tourism internationally to attract more tourists.
Bhabishwar Sharma, Council Chairperson, expressed confidence that the remaining development works in Thamel would be completed soon.
Vice-Chairperson Sahadev Dhamala mentioned that the Council is committed to developing Thamel as a tourism hub.
An election is taking place today to elect a 15-member working committee for the Council.
