PM Dahal inaugurates Melamchi Water Supply in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda today initiated the resupply of Melamchi water in Kathmandu from the Prime Minister’s office at Singha Durbar.

The inauguration took place with the symbolic opening of the public tap at Singha Durbar, officially commencing the water redistribution project.

Following damages incurred by the Melamchi Drinking Water Project during last year’s rainy season, caused by floods and landslides in Sindhupalchok’s Melamchi River, the water distribution in Kathmandu has now resumed.

Suresh Acharya, the Secretary of the Ministry of Water Supply, outlined the gradual distribution plan covering areas such as Anamnagar, Minbhawan, Mahankalchaur, Bhaktapur, Khumaltar, Balaju, and Bansbari.

Zakki Ahmed Ansari, the Project Director of the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, said that Kathmandu would now receive 170 million liters of water daily from Melamchi.

Despite a year-long hiatus in distribution due to the project’s source damage after the Melamchi river flood last year, the resumption of water flow to Kathmandu is a crucial development.

Traditionally, Melamchi water, which halts during the rainy season, is distributed in the capital for a few months during winter.
