NC-led govt in Gandaki Province loses majority as lawmaker Devkota ousted from his position

KATHMANDU: Gandaki Province Member of Parliament (MP) and Minister of Energy, Irrigation, and Drinking Water, Phanindra Devkota, has been removed from his post.

Speaker Krishna Prasad Dhital announced during the provincial assembly meeting on Friday that Minister Devkota has been relieved of his MP status.

Previously aligned with the Nepal Samajwadi Party, Devkota contested elections in Gorkha 2 (A) under the banner of the CPN (Maoist Center).

Despite the Maoist parliamentary party’s instructions, Devkota supported Chief Minister Surendraraj Pandey of Nepali Congress (NC) with his vote of confidence, leading to his appointment as Minister of Energy.

Following his support for the Chief Minister, Devkota’s ministerial role was confirmed.

However, with this decision, he will lose his ministerial post unless the Chief Minister decides otherwise within the next six months.

Moreover, Chief Minister Pandey has also lost his majority in the provincial assembly following Devkota’s removal as an MP.
