KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, emphasized the pivotal role of cinema in societal transformation, highlighting the importance of expanding Nepali films into the global arena by focusing on indigenous narratives.

Inaugurating the 7th Nepal International Film Festival (NIFF) organized by the Nepal Film and Cultural Academy at Sundhara-based Civil Mall on Thursday, Minister Sharma underscored the significance of such festivals in fostering a vibrant exchange of filmmaking ideas.

“Film is not merely a source of entertainment; it serves as a potent and influential medium for societal change,” she affirmed.

Minister Sharma further accentuated the inherent beauty and cultural diversity of Nepal, including its mountains, hills, and plains, which lend a unique charm to cinematic expressions.

She urged the Film Development Board to incorporate necessary programs into its agenda, aligning with ongoing discussions for the upcoming fiscal year budget.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Sharma revealed that legislation related to the film sector is currently under formulation, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the industry.

The 7th NIFF, set to run in Kathmandu until March 18, promises to showcase 88 films from 40 different countries, providing a platform for global filmmakers to engage in dialogue and collaboration, as highlighted by KP Pathak, Chairman of NIFF.

Bhuwan KC, Chairperson of the Film Development Board, lamented the lack of necessary policies hindering the Board’s ability to support such initiatives effectively.

However, he expressed the Board’s eagerness to overcome these obstacles and foster a thriving film ecosystem in Nepal.
