MELAMCHI: The eagerly anticipated water from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project is set to be supplied regularly to Kathmandu from January 15. The supply had faced disruptions due to flood damages in 2021.
Following necessary repairs in the affected area, the scheduled transfer of Melamchi water to Kathmandu has commenced from Wednesday evening.
As per information provided by Padam Bahadur Kunwar, Senior Divisional Engineer of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee and Sinohydro Corporation reached an agreement to transfer Melamchi water to Kathmandu within four days.
“Addressing the damages, Melamchi water will be transferred to Kathmandu from Wednesday, covering a distance of approximately 27 kilometers. Despite the initial 28-day plan, the water transfer work commenced, and Melamchi water has been successfully transferred from Helambu to Sundarijal in 21 days.”
Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) has announced its readiness to distribute Melamchi water to the residents of Kathmandu starting January 15 (Magh 1). Jakkie Ahmad Ansari, Project Director of the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee, provided information that 170 million liters of water will be supplied to Kathmandu from Melamchi every day.
The project has completed maintenance of Ambathan Gate No. 21, Water Transfer Gate No. 9, and Gate No. 1. The senior divisional engineer stated that the water transfer work for Kathmandu began on Wednesday evening.
The construction company employed more than 45 workers and essential machinery for repairing the damaged structures, according to Ansari. Minister Mahendra Ray Yadav also announced the intention to bring Melamchi water to Kathmandu by the end of Poush. Minister Yadav personally inspected the site three times for on-site evaluations.
