Constitutional Council meeting postponed until Friday

KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Council meeting, initially scheduled for Wednesday at 5 p.m. and convened by Prime Minister KP Oli, has been postponed to Friday.

According to a source close to the Prime Minister, the rescheduled meeting will now take place at 5 p.m. on Friday.

As outlined in the Constitution of Nepal, the Prime Minister serves as the Chairman of the Constitutional Council.

The Council also includes the Chief Justice, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The meeting was set to address the recommendation of a new Chief Justice.

The Judicial Council has submitted the names of eight judges for consideration.

However, the meeting to review these recommendations has been delayed.

The Constitutional Council’s role is to recommend one of the eight candidates put forward by the Judicial Council for the position of Chief Justice.

Following this, the President will appoint the new Chief Justice pending approval by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

Current Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha is scheduled to retire soon.

The Constitution stipulates that the process to appoint a new Chief Justice should commence at least one month prior to the incumbent’s retirement.
