KATHMANDU: The Maoist Center has voiced strong opposition to the ongoing preparations to impeach Indira Rana from her position as Deputy Speaker.
During a House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, Hitraj Pandey, the chief whip of the Maoist Center, expressed the party’s disapproval of the proposed removal.
He stated, “There has been talk in the media about removing Indira Rana. If this is true, our party strongly opposes and condemns this move,” and urged the ruling parties to clarify the situation.
The demand for Rana’s resignation came from MPs of the CPN-UML, who have warned of taking further action if she does not step down due to allegations of unbecoming conduct.
UML MP Hemraj Rai emphasized, “The Deputy Speaker is a respected member of this Parliament. It is concerning that no clarification has been provided. If there are issues, the facts should be presented to Parliament to avoid a situation where impeachment might be considered.”
UML MPs Surya Prasad Dhakal and Shobha Gyawali have also called on Deputy Speaker Rana to step aside.
In response to the ruling party’s demand, opposition parties have staged protests.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) expressed its disagreement with the move, with Santosh Pariyar, the chief whip of RSP, denouncing the decision as unacceptable for democracy.
RSP MPs Sumana Shrestha and Sobita Gautam have also urged the Deputy Speaker to remain resolute.
