Bailey bridge demanded at Bangsilaghat

KHOTANG: Local representatives in Khotang district have called for the construction of a bailey bridge over the Sunkoshi River to connect Khotang and Udaypur districts.

They have specifically requested that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport build this bridge at Bangsilaghat, which would link Baraha Pokhari Rural Municipality-5 in Khotang with Chaudandi Gadhi Municipality-1 in Udaypur.

The representatives reported that the Ministry has shown a positive response to their request.

A meeting with local representatives, active community members, and political party leaders from both districts resulted in a joint decision to seek the federal ministry’s support for this crucial infrastructure project.

Previously, local representatives had advocated for a bailey bridge at Phoksingtar to facilitate transportation to eastern Khotang towns.

The current discussion involved various stakeholders including local leaders and residents.

At present, there is a suspension bridge at Bangsilaghat, which was constructed six years ago at a cost of Rs 143 million and spans 235 meters.

However, a planned motorable bridge over the Sunkoshi River, initiated with a budget of Rs 191.8 million, remains incomplete.

The project, which began on November 17, 2022, has only reached 25 percent completion, despite a contract duration of 33 months.

The foundation stone for this bridge was laid by then-Foreign Minister Dr. Narayan Khadka on December 16, 2022.

Shalikram Banjara, Chairman of Baraha Pokhari Rural Municipality, reported that delays by the contractor have significantly impacted local communities.

The Road Department in Dharan has acknowledged the delay, attributing it to a necessary shift in the bridge’s location and the prolonged absence of the contracted party.
