NHRC probes alleged human rights violations in Rabi Lamichhane’s case

KATHMANDU:  The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an inquiry into alleged human rights violations during the handling of former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane’s custody transfer amid an ongoing cooperative fraud investigation.

The NHRC initiated inquiries after receiving complaints alleging human rights violations during Lamichhane’s midnight transfer from Chitwan to Kaski.

The complaint claims the transfer was ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and involved inhumane treatment, requesting an investigation to ensure the protection of human rights.

NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel stated that the commission has begun its investigation and sought further clarification from senior police officials, including Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tek Bahadur Tamang, during a meeting held on Monday.

NHRC member Manoj Duwadi emphasized the importance of upholding legal governance, ensuring fair pretrial rights, and respecting detainees’ fundamental human rights.

He further called for an impartial and independent investigation into the matter, as stated in the NHRC’s official release.

The NHRC plans to continue its investigation and seek additional information from IGP Basanta Kunwar to reach a conclusion on the allegations of human rights violations.
