Upgrading work of TIA begins

KATHMANDU: The work of upgrading the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has started since last night.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) is working to expand the parallel ‘Taxi Way’ to the southwest of the airport, the ‘International Apron’ to the north and the ‘Hangar Apron’ to the east of the airport.

The work is expected to run for about five months, with the international airport being shut down for flights for 10 hours a day.

Since, November 8, the airport will remain closed from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am every day.

Meanwhile, the government has proceeded with the action plan of operating two other international airports—Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa and Pokhara International Airport in Pokhara at full capacity.

Some international airlines, including Fly Dubai, Zazeera, Thai Air Asia have already announced regular flights from Bhairahawa.

The government has also announced an attractive package including concessions to the airlines for the operation of the two airports, which have not been able to have regular international flights for a long time since they came into operation.
