Dashain: Devotees worship Skandamata on the sixth day of Navaratri

KATHMANDU: Today marks the sixth day of Navaratri, known as Ashwin Shukla Panchami, when devotees are worshipping Skandamata, the fifth of the nine Durgas.

According to the Chandogya Shruti, Sanatkumar was named Skanda due to his divine birth from Bhagwati’s power.

Parvati, as the mother of Skanda, is revered as Skandamata.

Throughout these nine days, chants of the Durga Saptashati (Chandi), Shreemad Devi Bhagawat, and other goddess “stotras” resonate in places of worship.

It is widely believed that devoutly worshiping the goddess during Navaratri brings power, wealth, and knowledge to devotees.

Following this tradition, Vedic Sanatan Dharma practitioners celebrate special rituals dedicated to Goddess Durga annually from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Nawami.

The prasad, which is worshiped over these nine days, is carried forward from Bijayadashami to Kojagrat Purnima, allowing Nepali communities to observe the Bada Dashain festival for a full 15 days.
