PM Dahal confident Sunkoshi-Marin Project will positively impact national economy

KATHMANDU, May 8: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed optimism regarding the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project (SMDMP), affirming its potential to make a significant quantitative contribution to the national economy.

Following the breakthrough of the SMDMP tunnel at Kanadhungri in Sunkoshi rural municipality-7 of Sindhuli district, PM Dahal articulated his belief that the project’s completion would enhance irrigation systems and consequently boost agricultural yields in the region.

Addressing attendees at the breakthrough ceremony, PM Dahal highlighted the transformative impact of the project, emphasizing its role in bolstering the nation’s economic landscape through improved irrigation and electricity generation.

“The successful breakthrough of the project’s tunnel marks a significant milestone, and I am confident that the remaining tasks will be completed within the specified timeframe,” stated PM Dahal.

Notably, the completion of the 13.3-kilometer tunnel ahead of schedule is a remarkable achievement for the project.

PM Dahal underscored the crucial role of agriculture in Nepal’s economic development, stressing the need to increase productivity and achieve self-sufficiency in food production.

He emphasized the importance of leveraging water resources from glaciers for agricultural, drinking water, and energy generation purposes to advance overall national development.

Furthermore, PM Dahal highlighted the potential multifaceted development in the Sunkoshi and Tamakoshi river basin areas following the project’s operation, including opportunities for fisheries and tourism.

The SMDMP is expected to provide irrigation facilities spanning 122 thousand hectares across Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, and Dhanusha districts, further contributing to regional development.

PM Dahal urged all stakeholders to cooperate for the timely completion of transformative national projects, emphasizing their pivotal role in achieving goals of good governance, social justice, and prosperity.

The successful implementation of the SMDMP, according to PM Dahal, showcases the technical efficiency of technicians working in the hydro power and irrigation sectors, highlighting the potential for optimizing water resources to boost agricultural productivity and reduce import imbalances.

As the project progresses, PM Dahal envisions a prosperous future for the surrounding communities and a significant boost to economic activities in the region.
