Home Minister Aryal inspects central prisons, meets Top Bahadur Rayamajhi

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal visited two major prisons and the central prison hospital in Kathmandu on Tuesday, assessing the facilities and meeting inmates.

Accompanied by Home Secretary, Chief of the Peace and Security Division, Director General of the Department of Prison Management, and senior police officials, Minister Aryal inspected the Central Jail in Jagannath Deval and Dillibazar Prison.

At Jagannath Deval, Aryal toured the men’s, women’s, and juvenile blocks and spoke with inmates to understand their concerns. He also visited Dillibazar Prison, meeting prisoners in both the male and female blocks.

During the inspection, Aryal interacted with two high-profile prisoners, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former CPN-UML secretary serving time over the fake Bhutanese refugee case, and Rajesh Ahiraj, former provincial head of Madhesh, convicted of sexually assaulting a minor employed at his home. Photos of the minister seated with the inmates were released publicly.

Prison officials briefed the minister on capacity, infrastructure, and inmate numbers. Aryal expressed concern for elderly and chronically ill inmates and emphasized that legal relief and appropriate support should be provided as per law.
