Education Minister Shrestha vows to appoint experts as university leaders

KATHMANDU: Sumana Shrestha, the newly appointed Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, has taken a proactive stance by initiating steps towards amending relevant laws to ensure the appointment of experts as Chancellor and Co-Chancellor of all 11 universities across the country.

Upon assuming office at Singha Durbar, Minister Shrestha directed authorities to initiate preliminary measures aimed at enhancing the quality of education for Nepali youths and to introduce amendments in existing legislation to curb politicization within universities.

During the ceremony, she articulated plans to conduct a comprehensive survey to understand the reasons why Nepali youths pursue higher education abroad.

Additionally, she emphasized the importance of improving the quality of education and identified key areas of focus through discussions with officials from the Education Ministry.

Minister Shrestha underscored the significance of facilitating discussions on the School Education Bill 2080, currently under consideration in the Parliamentary Committee, within provinces.

This move aligns with the Education Committee’s decision to advance the bill for further deliberation.

The Secretaries of the Ministry, Suresh Adhikari, and Pramila Devi Acharya, extended a warm welcome to Minister Shrestha during the occasion.

Prior to her appointment as Education Minister, Shrestha, a lawmaker of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, has demonstrated her leadership abilities through various roles such as a management consultant, entrepreneur, and campaigner.

Notably, she spearheaded a movement mobilizing communities at the local level for the reconstruction of Kasthamandap and the conservation of Ranipokhari.

Shrestha holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
