Over 2,047 voters listed by EC for Jan 25 Elections, most residing in Madhes
The Election Commission (EC) has released the final voter list for the National Assembly election, indicating that 1,498 voters will participate, encompassing 549 members from provincial assemblies, local-level mayors, and deputy mayors. The majority of voters are in Madhes province, totaling 347, including 107 provincial assembly members and 267 local-level mayor and deputy mayor.
Agreement reached in Barathwa incident, agitation withdrawn
A breakthrough has been achieved in the aftermath of the Barathawa incident in Sarlahi, as both the victim’s family and the administration have reached a consensus on 11 points. The agreement was forged during a discussion on Sunday, involving representatives from the District Security Committee, the victims, and protesting groups.
NEPSE records dip by 26.36 points, hydropower sector shows growth
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) plummeted by 26.36 points in comparison to the previous trading day, to stand at 2022.9 points. There has been a decrease in trading volume as well. While the previous day saw transactions worth NPR 5.58 billion, Sunday witnessed deals amounting to NPR 5.24 billion. When 81 companies saw an increase, 159 saw a decline in their value, while 6 remained stable. On this day, all sectors experienced a decline except for the hydropower sector. The positive atmosphere in the hydropower sector has been created by the agreement with India for electricity export, resulting in a 1.03% increase in the sector’s value. Banking declined by 1.8%, Development Bank by 1.1%, Finance by 1.3%, Insurance by 1.3%, Manufacturing by 1.6%, Microfinance by 0.4%, Non-Life Insurance by 1.6%, Others by 1.8%, and Trading by 2.1%.
Curfew imposed in Sarlahi’s Barahathwa Municipality
The District Administration Office in Sarlahi has imposed a curfew in Barahathwa Municipality, effective from this afternoon until tomorrow morning, following heightened concerns of potential vandalism, arson, and public unrest stemming from a recent protest on Friday. Chief District Officer of Sarlahi, Komal Prasad Dhamala, stated that the decision to impose the curfew was prompted by the perceived threat to public and private properties and structures arising from the unrest witnessed during the Friday protest in Barahathwa Municipality.
UML finalizes 19 NA candidates with diverse representation
The CPN-UML has finalized its roster of 19 candidates for the upcoming National Assembly (NA) elections scheduled for January 25. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel announced the decision after a Secretariat meeting held on Sunday, where the names of the 19 nominees were finalized for official nomination. The selected candidates demonstrate a commitment to diverse representation, with a strategic focus on specific regions and communities, he stated.
Unified Socialist agrees on 2 seats in National Assembly election
In anticipation of the upcoming National Assembly (NA) elections, the ruling partner Unified Socialist Party has scaled back its aspirations, opting to vie for only two seats. As the deadline for nominations looms on Monday, Unified Socialist, the political faction within the coalition, has finalized its decision to pursue only 2 seats in the National Assembly. Initially laying claim to three seats, Samajwadi faced discontent after the allocation fell short.
Maoist Center finalizes candidates for NA election
The CPN-Maoist Center has finalized its candidates for the National Assembly (NA) elections scheduled for January 25. A meeting held on Sunday decided on six individuals to represent the party in the upcoming elections. According to Maoist Center spokesperson Agni Sapkota, “The majority of the candidates have been confirmed. There will be a coalition meeting shortly, and the final selections will be made afterward.” Another official revealed the list of candidates as: Champadevi Karki from Koshi, Shreekrishna Adhikari from Bagmati, Manrupa Sharma from Gandaki, Jhakku Prasad Subedi from Lumbini, Bishnu Bishwakarma from Karnali, and Renu Chand from Sudurpaschim.
RPP announces nine candidates for NA elections, Uddhav Poudel to contest in Koshi
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has finalized its lineup for the upcoming National Assembly elections scheduled on January 25. RPP has selected nine candidates for the National Assembly election, as determined in the party meeting held on Sunday in Kathmandu. Uddhav Paudel has been chosen as the candidate representing Koshi Province. Within the Bagmati Province, RPP is endorsing candidates in four constituencies: Nanu Nagarkoti for women, Bharatmani Bhatta for minorities, Purna Bahadur BK for the Dalit community, and Hemjan Gurung for other categories. In the Gandaki Province, Gaumati Shrestha and Rom Bahadur Bhandari have been nominated for women and other categories, respectively. According to RPP spokesperson Mohan Shrestha, the party has nominated Niranjan Thapa and Bijayalaxmi Singh as candidates for the Lumbini Province.
Nepal and India agree on strengthening power transmission system
Nepal and India have held important discussions and agreed on eight various topics on energy sector. The 11th meeting of Nepal-India Energy Secretary level Joint Steering Committee that concluded in Chitwan today has agreed on especially the topic of strengthening the electricity transmission system. Nabin Raj Singh, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, said the meeting discussed various agenda prepared by the Joint-secretary level Joint Taskforce. Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Gopal Prasad Sigdel, and Secretary at India’s Ministry of Energy, Pankaj Agrawal, co-chaired the meeting.
