Chief Minister suspends all ministers except of Janamat and UML in Madhesh province
Chief Minister Satish Singh of the Madhesh provincial government has suspended all ministers, except those representing the Janamat Party and CPN-UML. According to the Secretariat of the Chief Minister, the suspension came after the ministers refused to step down at CM Singh’s request. The suspended ministers include Bharat Sah, Finance Minister, and Yubraj Bhattari, Tourism Minister, both from the CPN (Maoist Center). Govinda Neupane, Agriculture Minister, and Bechi Lungeli, Drinking Water Minister, from the CPN (Unified Socialist) were also suspended. Additionally, Urmila Chaudhary, Labor Minister from the Nagarik Unmukti Party, and Bimala Ansari, Home Minister from the Nepal Sanghiya Samajbadi Party, were affected by the suspension.
PM Dahal, NC leader Koirala meet in Baluwatar
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala held a meeting on Saturday morning. The meeting, seen as significant in the political landscape, comes in the context of the changing political scenario and PM Dahal’s decision to seek a vote of confidence in Parliament instead of resigning after losing his majority. Dr. Koirala confirmed the meeting but urged to view it as a routine interaction. Sources close to PM Dahal indicated that his decision to seek confidence votes to potentially facilitate the formation of a government under the leadership of President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, as per Article 76(3) of the Constitution, following his potential defeat. With Dahal preparing to seek a vote of confidence on July 12, his meeting with an influential NC leader like Koirala holds particular significance.
Gold price increases by Rs 2,600 in a week
The price of gold in the Nepali market has surged by Rs 2,600 per tola this week. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of hallmark gold, which was Rs 141,800 per tola last Friday, has risen to Rs 144,400 per tola this Friday. The Federation reports that the price of gold on June 30 was Rs 142,000 per tola, on July 1 it was Rs 142,200, and on July 2 it was Rs 142,300 per tola. On July 3, the price increased to Rs 142,700 per tola, followed by Rs 144,300 on July 4, and finally reaching Rs 144,400 per tola on July 5. Similarly, the price of silver, which was Rs 1,790 per tola on June 28, has increased to Rs 1,870 per tola on July 5.
Police Inspector deployed at Former PM Oli’s residence dies, investigation underway
An Armed Police Force (APF) inspector assigned as the security chief at the residence of CPN-UML Chairman and former Prime Minister KP Oli has passed away. According to DSP Rajan Karki, spokesperson for the Bhaktapur District Police Office, Inspector Umesh Thapa, who was stationed at Oli’s residence in Balkot, died last night. “We have sent the body to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj for post-mortem,” DSP Karki said, adding, “The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, and an investigation is underway.” Police stated that the cause of death will be revealed following the post-mortem report.
CAN to seek clarification from four officials including Vice President Singh
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has decided to seek clarification from four officials, including Vice President Roshan Kumar Singh. In a meeting held on Thursday, CAN decided to demand explanations from Vice President Singh, Central Members Madhav Kumar Karmacharya and Durga Raj Pathak, and Sunsari District Cricket Association President Chetanath Paudel. CAN’s decision follows allegations that these individuals engaged in giving interviews and spreading misleading information in the media and on social media against CAN’s decisions during the World Cup cricket participation.
Police receive 5,300 complaints on cooperatives-related fraud
The Nepal Police has reported the registration of 5,300 complaints related to cooperative issues. During a parliamentary investigation committee meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday, police officials informed that so far, 5,300 complaints have been registered concerning the misuse of cooperative funds. Quoting the police data, Committee Chair Surya Thapa stated that 55,410 victims have filed complaints, with claims amounting to Rs 11.66 billion. Police have arrested 294 suspects, while 856 remain at large.
Flood risks high till Sunday, citizens urged to adopt precautions
The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged the general public to adopt high security alert stating that there would be risk of floods in different parts of the country up to coming Sunday. As there is a possibility of heavy rainfall till Sunday, the water level in the rivers may increase causing a risk of flooding. According to flood expert and hydrologist Engineer Bijay Dhukuchu, the flow of small rivers flowing through Udayapur, Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Sindhupalchowk, Ramechhap, Achham, Doti, Kailali and adjoining districts is also likely to increase today. “Tomorrow, most of the small rivers across the country are likely to see an increase in their flow and some small rivers flowing through Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and SudurPaschim provinces may face flash floods,” he said.
One missing, three houses swept away in Dolakha flood
A person has gone missing and three houses have been swept away in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9, Dolakha district, due to floods triggered by torrential rainfall. Jangmu Sherpa, 64, went missing on Friday night when the flooded Rolwaling rivulet swept him away, according to Nima Geli Sherpa, the chairperson of Gaurishankar-9. The chairperson added that they are currently assessing the details of the losses caused by the flood.
CM Singh of Madhesh province wins vote of confidence
Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh of Madhesh Province has secured a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly. CM Singh received support from 67 lawmakers out of the 107-member assembly, while 34 lawmakers voted against him. The assembly’s composition includes 24 lawmakers from CPN-UML (excluding the Speaker), 22 from Nepali Congress, 13 from Janamat, nine from Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, 19 from JSP, nine from Maoist Center, and seven from CPN (Unified Socialist). Additionally, the RPP, Nagarik Unmukti Party, and Sanghiya Samajbadi Party each hold one seat in the assembly.
KP Oli to lead new government: Nepali Congress
The Nepali Congress has announced that a new government will be formed under the leadership of CPN-UML, as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal and the agreement between the two parties. During a parliamentary party meeting held at New Baneshwor on Saturday, the Nepali Congress declared that UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli will head the new government. Furthermore, the party decided to oppose the confidence vote of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, according to Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak.
Three killed, five injured in Syangja landslide
Three people lost their lives in a landslide in Biruwa Rural Municipality-6 of Syangja district on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Hari Maya Sharma, 67, Madhav Sharma, 71, and Guheshwori Sharma, 65, according to Indra Bahadur Rana, spokesperson of the District Police Office. The landslide occurred near their house in the morning. Additionally, five others sustained injuries in the incident. They were rescued by locals and a team from the Biruwa Police Office.
