National Assembly session to begin today

KATHMANDU: The 19th session of the National Assembly (NA) is set to begin today.

As the Parliament building at the International Conference Centre in New Baneshwor was destroyed by fire during the Gen-Z protests, preparations have been made to convene the session at the Federal Parliament Secretariat in Singha Durbar. The meeting is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.

In preparation for the session, National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal convened a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on Friday. The agenda for the first sitting includes the Chairperson reading out the President’s letter convening the session and presenting a condolence motion for Nepali Congress lawmaker Baldev Bohara, who passed away recently.

According to Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Federal Parliament Secretariat, all preparations for the session have been completed. President Ram Chandra Poudel convened the National Assembly session for Sunday, January 18 at 11:00 am, in accordance with Article 93(1) of the Constitution of Nepal, following a recommendation from the Government of Nepal and the Council of Ministers.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has also completed preparations for the election of 19 National Assembly members scheduled for January 25. The Commission has stated that one member has already been elected unopposed.

The session is considered significant as preparations for the House of Representatives election are underway and new members are set to join the National Assembly.
