Bhoto Jatra celebrated with vibrant spectacle in Kathmandu Valley (Photos)

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Valley was alive with excitement this Sunday as the annual Bhoto Jatra unfolded with grandiosity.

This traditional festival, marking the culmination of the month-long chariot-pulling celebration for Rato Machhindranath, reached its zenith with the revered display of the bhoto—a jewel-encrusted vest.

The grand procession, which culminates at Jawalakhel in Lalitpur, is a highlight of the Rato Machhindranath festival.

This event, deeply rooted in cultural and religious significance, showcases a magnificent black vest adorned with glittering jewels, believed to have belonged to the mythical Nagraj, the serpent king.

Devotees and spectators alike gathered to witness the ceremonial display, which symbolizes the end of a month of rituals dedicated to Machhindranath, the deity revered for bringing rain, ensuring good harvests, and bestowing prosperity.

The festival’s rituals are imbued with the belief that paying homage to Lord Machhindranath during this period can usher in good fortune and fulfill cherished wishes.

The government declared a public holiday in the valley to mark the celebration. President Ram Chandra Paudel honored the event with his presence.

Captured through the lens of Khabarhub photojournalist Chirayu Shakya, these images offer a glimpse into the lively celebrations and the cultural richness that defines Bhoto Jatra.
