Report filed against Minister Kiranti for allegedly harming religious sentiments

KATHMANDU: A complaint has been lodged against Sudan Kiranti, the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, at the District Police Circle in Teku.

Dhruva Raj Luitel from Kathmandu registered the complaint, asserting that the Minister’s recent statements have caused harm to religious sentiments.

Minister Kiranti’s remarks during a recent program meeting in Kathmandu have triggered legal action.

In his address, Kiranti declared, “To claim non-acceptance of the constitution by Hindus is tantamount to treason. Traitors will be handcuffed and put in jail.”

The filed complaint contends that Kiranti, in his capacity as the Minister of Culture, acted irresponsibly.

Luitel specified in the police report that Kiranti, tasked with overseeing the culture and tourism sector of Nepal, used his speech to denigrate a religion with a longstanding existence, while also disparaging religions other than Christianity.

Kiranti is accused of spreading religious prejudice by labeling non-Christians as traitors, a violation of the legal mandate prohibiting the infliction of emotional distress based on caste, sect, or class.

Furthermore, the complaint highlights the viral dissemination of Kiranti’s speech on social media.

It emphasizes that Kiranti, by masquerading as a Christian preacher and displaying discriminatory behavior toward other Vedic Sanatan religions, has violated Section 156(1) of the Civil Crimes Code of 2074 A.D.

The complainant has sought the application of Section 156(2) of the Act, demanding a three-year imprisonment term and a fine of 20,000 rupees for the alleged offense.
