KATHMANDU: Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Kathmandu this morning, marking the commencement of his participation in the seventh meeting of the Nepal-India Foreign Minister-level Joint Commission.

Warmly welcomed by his Nepali counterpart, Minister NP Saud, Jaishankar’s visit holds significant diplomatic importance.

Sources from the Indian Embassy have confirmed that discussions during the Joint Commission meeting will primarily center around the effective implementation of agreements established during the recent visit of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to India.

While the finalized agenda awaits confirmation post-discussions with the Prime Minister, the Foreign Ministry source expressed optimism about the forthcoming deliberations.

Insiders from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have hinted at a potentially game-changing development—a prospective agreement to boost India’s assistance under the small aid project to Nepal from Rs. 5 crore to Rs. 20 crore, with official signing anticipated during the ongoing visit.

In a bid to enhance connectivity, Nepal is poised to propose the opening of international air routes, emphasizing the longstanding demand for air routes from Mahendranagar, Nepalgunj, and Bhairahawa.

As diplomatic engagements unfold, Jaishankar’s visit holds the promise of fostering stronger ties and addressing key bilateral concerns between Nepal and India.
