The Paris Olympics is well under way, with more than 10,000 athletes competing in hundreds of events across the 16-day festival of sport in France.

The French capital’s landmarks have provided an enthralling backdrop for the opening ceremony and for the competitors – with more stunning images being captured and added to this round-up every day.
Some events are being held away from Paris, with the sailing and windsurfing in the Bay of Marseilles.
And the surfing contest is taking place almost 10,000 miles away – in Tahiti, French Polynesia.
For many athletes the Games is the culmination of years of training and sacrifice.
For some the hard work pays off.
But for others the Games will end in heartbreak.
The drama and emotion of the Olympics will draw to a close with a ceremony at the Stade de France on 11 August, with the Paralympic Games due to begin on 28 August.
