KATHMANDU: Last week in Nepal was marked by a flurry of significant events across various sectors, showcasing the country’s dynamic political, economic, and social landscape. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the developments:

Last week, the government unveiled a budget of Rs 1 trillion 860 billion and 300 million for the coming fiscal year 2024/025.

Finance Minister Barshaman Pun presented the budget through his budget speech on Tuesday at the joint session of the Federal Parliament.

According to the budget, Rs 1 trillion  140 billion 660 million has been allocated for recurring expenditure, Rs 352 billion 350 million for capital expenditure and Rs 367 billion 180 million for fiscal management.

He also delineated the core objectives, priorities, strategies, and transformative initiatives of the forthcoming fiscal year budget.

In a step towards gender equality, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane announced measures to support female traffic police personnel by exempting them from field duties during menstruation. This initiative aimed to promote workplace inclusivity and prioritize the well-being of women in law enforcement.

In another development, the government took decisive action by forming a seven-member parliamentary probe committee to investigate misappropriation in cooperatives. This move was aimed at addressing concerns regarding financial irregularities within the cooperative sector and ensure accountability.

In another decision, Surendra Pandey, leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party, was appointed as the Chief Minister of Gandaki Province. This decision followed a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the appointment of Khagaraj Adhikari as Chief Minister, reaffirming the importance of constitutional adherence and legal procedures.

On the other hand, the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) released its 61st annual report, revealing a staggering surge in government arrears to over Rs 1.18 trillion.

This amount highlighted the urgent need for fiscal responsibility and effective debt management strategies to mitigate financial risks.

Meanwhile, President Ram Chandra Paudel delivered a message on Republic Day, underscoring the significance of republicanism in upholding political rights and fostering national unity.

His remarks also paid tribute to the sacrifices of past leaders and underscored the ongoing commitment to democratic values and principles.

Kailash Sirohiya, Chairman of Kantipur Media Group, garnered attention as he was released from police custody under specific conditions last week.

His subsequent airlift to Kathmandu for medical treatment underscored the intersection of legal and health issues, sparking public discourse on justice and human rights.

Meanwhile, Ncell, one of Nepal’s leading telecom companies, made headlines by applying for a five-year renewal of its operating license and proposing a staggered payment plan to manage financial obligations. This strategic move reflected the company’s efforts to navigate regulatory challenges and sustain its operations amidst evolving market dynamics.

In a setback for Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, the US Embassy rejected his visa application, preventing him from participating in the T-20 World Cup. This decision sparked public outcry and raised questions about visa policies and international sports diplomacy.

Similarly, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ reiterated the government’s commitment to concluding transitional justice tasks and consolidating the peace process during Republic Day celebrations.

His remarks underscored the importance of reconciliation and accountability in addressing the legacies of Nepal’s conflict era.

Meanwhile, the celebration of the 71st International Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) Day commemorated the historic achievement of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary’s successful ascent of Mount Everest. This event served as a reminder of Nepal’s rich mountaineering heritage and its global significance in adventure tourism.

Last week, the launch of the 21st edition of the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) showcased the power of storytelling in promoting cultural exchange and environmental awareness.

The festival’s focus on women in filmmaking underscored the importance of diversity and representation in the film industry.

In a setback for Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, the US Embassy rejected his visa application, preventing him from participating in the T-20 World Cup. This decision sparked public outcry and raised questions about visa policies and international sports diplomacy.

Meanwhile, the arrest of Tharka Man Lama in connection with a gold smuggling case shed light on the persistent challenges of illicit trade and organized crime.

This development underscored the government’s commitment to combating financial crimes and upholding the rule of law.
