KATHMANDU: Last week saw several notable developments across different sectors in Nepal, reflecting a period of transition, legal deliberation, and international engagement.

The government made significant changes in leadership with the appointment of Ek Narayan Aryal as the new Chief Secretary, replacing Liladevi Gadtaula, who is retiring.

Gadtaula’s tenure was historic as Nepal’s first female Chief Secretary, and her departure marks the end of a groundbreaking era. Aryal, previously Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, is expected to bring continuity in governance expertise.

In the military sphere, Ashok Raj Sigdel has been appointed as the Chief of the Nepal Army by President Ram Chandra Paudel.

Sigdel, who has been serving as the acting Chief of the Army, will officially assume the role on Bhadra 24. This appointment underscores a consolidation of military leadership and continuity in defense management.

The Supreme Court delivered crucial rulings that have significant implications for administrative and legal processes.

Overall, the week was marked by significant administrative changes, important legal decisions, cultural celebrations, and international engagements, all contributing to the dynamic landscape of Nepal’s socio-political and cultural environment.

On one hand, the court rejected an interim order to annul the 30-year service term for Armed Police Force officials, thereby upholding the scheduled retirements of 16 officials, including a Deputy Inspector General.

This decision maintains the status quo regarding service term limits. On the other hand, the court issued an interim order preventing the mandatory requirement of national identity cards for accessing social security allowances, a move intended to ease administrative burdens and improve accessibility.

The legal system also saw another delay in a high-profile case involving former Speaker Agni Sapkota, who faces murder charges from the Maoist Insurgency period.

The Supreme Court postponed the verdict for the fourth time in 12 years, reflecting ongoing delays and potential challenges in the judicial process.

In terms of international relations, Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi visited Nepal, meeting with both Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Paudel.

Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, including the proposal for an Omani embassy in Kathmandu and direct air connectivity to bolster trade and tourism.

Culturally, Nepal observed Shri Krishna Janmastami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna with various traditional activities. This festival not only highlights the significance of Hindu traditions but also fosters cultural unity across the country.

The disappearance of two Spanish tourists, Erik Kasanovas and Molass Missy, while hiking in the Annapurna Circuit has raised concerns about the safety of trekking in remote areas.

Despite an extensive search, their whereabouts remain unknown, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures for tourists.

In the realm of sports, the government recognized the achievements of women volleyball players from the ‘CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League, 2024’ by awarding them cash prizes.

This acknowledgment of Nepal’s second-place finish underscores the country’s commitment to supporting athletic talent.

Finally, in entertainment, Dinesh DC was appointed as the Chairman of the Film Development Board. Known for his extensive experience in the Nepali film industry, DC’s new role is expected to influence the development and policy-making in the sector, potentially boosting the local film industry.

Overall, the week was marked by significant administrative changes, important legal decisions, cultural celebrations, and international engagements, all contributing to the dynamic landscape of Nepal’s socio-political and cultural environment.
