Road travel returning to normal after floods and landslides

KATHMANDU: Road transport to the Kathmandu Valley has improved as various entry points have become operational again.

The roads leading to the Valley were previously closed due to flooding and landslides caused by heavy rains in recent days.

Vehicular traffic is now flowing on the Tribhuvan Highway and the Prithvi Highway after clearing landslide debris at Jhyaplekhola in Dhading.

Superintendent of Police at the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Office, Rabin Karki, reported that vehicles are exiting the Valley via Sanga Bhanjyang in the east, reaching Chautara via the Araniko Highway and Bhakunde Besi via the BP Highway.

Karki noted that while the transit point to Nuwakot is open, heavy vehicles may face some difficulties on that route. However, the road leading out of the Valley via Dakshinkali remains closed.

Authorities have indicated that it will take time to fully restore traffic on roads where RCC bridges have been washed away and large stretches have been eroded or swept away by floods and landslides.

The severe weather on September 27 and 28 damaged over 50 roadways at more than 100 locations across the country, with 20 bridges—both large and small—being swept away.

Security personnel from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force are working tirelessly to assist stranded passengers and ensure they reach their destinations.
