Top leaders agree to convene Constitutional Council meeting

KATHMANDU: The top leaders of three major political parties have reached a consensus to convene a meeting of the Constitutional Council soon.

A meeting held on Sunday morning, with the participation of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda,” CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli, and the leader of the ruling party Sher Bahadur Deuba, resulted in an agreement to hold a Constitutional Council meeting to discuss the appointment of the Chief Justice.

The current Chief Justice, Hari Krishna Karki, is set to retire this Friday, making the appointment crucial.

As per the constitutional provision, it is the responsibility of the Constitutional Council to recommend the appointment of the Chief Justice to the Supreme Court.

Ideally, the Chief Justice should recommend a successor one month prior to their retirement.

However, in this case, the meeting of the Constitutional Council has been called even though there is less than a week left for Chief Justice Karki’s retirement.
