KATHMANDU: The government has decided to hold the National Assembly (NA) elections on January 25, 2024.

This decision, based on the recommendation of the Election Commission, was finalized during a Cabinet meeting held today.

Government Spokesperson Rekha Sharma stated that the decision aligns with the constitutional provisions outlined in Article 86, Sub-section 3 of the Constitution of Nepal.

As per this constitutional mandate, one-third of the National Assembly members’ terms are set to expire on March 13, 2024.

In accordance with the National Assembly Member Election Act, 2075, elections must be conducted 35 days before the vacancy arises, leading to the chosen date of January 25.

Notably, the posts of 20 members, comprising 19 elected representatives and one nominated by the government, will become vacant on March 3, 2024.

The electoral process for the National Assembly involves the election of one-third of the vacant member posts every two years.

Drawing upon the results of the National Census 2078, the Election Commission has determined that 53 provincial assembly members who are voters, along with 19 chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of rural municipalities, as well as the heads and deputy heads of municipalities, will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the National Assembly member election.
