KATHMANDU: Residents of the Bancharedanda landfill site in Nuwakot district have issued a stern warning that starting from September 18 they will no longer permit the disposal of garbage.
They allege that the authorities have failed to effectively manage waste in accordance with the established agreement.
The Bancharedanda Landfill Site Affected Area Concern Committee has unequivocally stated that they will impede the dumping of garbage originating from Kathmandu if previous agreements are not adhered to.
Shree Ram Dhungana, the coordinator of the Committee, emphasized, “Coexistence of people and garbage is untenable. This forms the crux of our primary demand.”
Their demands include the declaration of the landfill-affected region as a specially designated sensitive area, acquisition and preservation of the impacted zone as an uninhabited green space, and a prohibition on disposing hospital, pesticide, and industrial waste.
Historically, waste from the Kathmandu Valley has been deposited in Bancharedanda, situated on the border between Kakani Rural Municipality in Nuwakot and Dhuniveshi Municipality in Dhading.
Despite intermittent protests by local inhabitants, interim measures have been implemented to manage garbage disposal.
