SC hearing on Rabi Lamichhane’s case underway

KATHMANDU: The hearing of the case related to the citizenship dispute of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane has resumed in the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the Constitutional Bench comprising Chief Justice Harikrishna Karki, Justices Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Dr. Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Anil Kumar Sinha, had decided to continue the hearing on Friday as the Wednesday’s hearing, expected to give final verdict on the case, was not completed then.

As Minister Lamichhane’s lawyers and the lawyers of the public prosecutor’s office did not finish their arguments on Wednesday, the case had been given the status of one to be continued on Friday.

Senior advocates Sunil Pokharel and Sushil Pant argued on behalf of Lamichhane today.  Similarly, Sajeevraj Regmi also took part in the hearing on behalf of the public prosecutor’s office.

Prior to that, the writ petitioner’s advocates took part in the hearing.

On behalf of the writ petitioner, five advocates including Ravi Basaula, Yuvraj Paudel, Surendra Bhandari, and Nitika Dhungana took part in the hearing today.

The writ petitioner’s advocates argued that as citizenship has to be acquired following a certain procedure and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Lamichhane has not gone through the procedure as provisioned in the legislation his status of RSP Chair and lawmaker has to be revoked.
