Government urges President to authenticate Citizenship Bill

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to formally urge President Ram Chandra Paudel to authenticate the Citizenship Bill that was recently passed by the Federal Parliament.

A meeting of the cabinet held on Friday decided to request the President to authenticate the Bill, which has been pending in the President’s Office since last September.

President Paudel has already sought legal consultation on the Bill, which has been held up in the President’s Office without authentication during the tenure of the then President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, too, has consulted legal professionals, including the Attorney General, regarding constitutional matters related to the progression of the Bill.

According to a constitutional provision, the Federal Parliament is required to review the Bill within 15 days upon its resubmission.
