Climate change severe threat to human society: PM Dahal

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said the impact of climate change is not limited to a party, community, or country, but has become a common threat to the entire human society.

Releasing a book penned by youth leader Bishal Khadka, ‘Ecological Crisis: Common Challenge of Eight Billion People’ at Baluwatar today, PM Dahal viewed that although climate change is a common global problem, there are different approaches to it. Capitalists have one and Marxists the other. Poor did not cause climate change; all need to accept this fact.”

According to him, among major political parties, CPN-Maoist Center was whetting debates on climate change. He reminded that the documents presented in the 8th general convention of the party had mentioned the climate crisis, and measures to address it.

“On the eve of COP28, I want to assure you that the Maoist Centre and the present government are serious and sensitive to ecology. We are equally worried over future generation as is a mother to her children,” PM Dahal underscored.

At the program, Maoist leader Ram Karki mentioned that the book had shown the path to protect ecology. Stressing on the need to stop the development activities and infrastructure building that destroy ecology, he clarified that it was necessary to move ahead in eco and people-friendly way. The book has encouraged to return community heritages to the community itself, leader Karki added.

Commentating on the book, lawmaker of Rastriya Swatantra Party, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, viewed that book had provided guidance on the impacts of climate change, measures to resolve it and way forward. Ecology has become the main issue of 21st century nationally and internationally, he added.

Most of the countries of the world including Nepal have been preparing for the UN Climate Summit, COP28. The government has been holding internal discussions on the concerns to be put forth by Nepal in the COP28.

Khadka has talked in a lucid manner about the crisis brought forth by climate change and why Marxist ideology was necessary for the solution of this crisis.
