Fake Bhutanese refugee scam: custody for 16 continues for two more days



KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has endorsed the police custody of 16 people arrested in the Bhutanese refugees scam for two more days.

The court granted two more days after they were presented before it seeking an extension, said Superintendent of Police of District Police Range, Kathmandu, Sitaram Rijal.

The district attorney’s office now must register the case in court within the next two days. So far, 16 people including the former deputy prime minister and former home minister and the sitting government secretary have been arrested.

On Monday, the police submitted its investigation report to the public prosecutor which stated that 17 more people, including Prateek, the son of former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal, and Neeraj, the son of Indrajit Rai, are absconding.

A total of 113 people have filed 22 complaints before the police saying that 275 million rupees was defrauded from them.
