UML Chair labels “leftist unity’ as a populist approach

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli urged party central committee members to refrain from advocating for left-wing unity saying that it is merely a ‘populist approach’.

Drawing on historical events, he pointed out that the party had previously split twice during unification efforts in 2007BS, emphasizing that the concept of uniting the left wing is not a novel strategy.

Oli said, “The notion that left-wing power will not diminish is a populist perspective. I implore my colleagues to resist it.”

“Even when I entered politics, party divisions persisted. Back then, the rallying cry was for left-wing unity. However, the more we strive for unity, the more fractures appear. One union begets two separations,” he added.

He further added, “In our 75-year history, the unity of one led to the division of two, a necessity at that time. Without it, government formation and effective policy implementation would have been impossible.”

He argued that forces aligned with left-wing ideologies cannot effectively serve the interests of the people if the movement is continually disrupted by internal divisions.
