KATHMANDU: Commenced with the slogan of “two hours of volunteerism in a week for the nation”, the Bagmati cleanup campaign has entered its 11th year and has managed as high as 20,000 metric tons of garbage where more than 1.5 million people have collected waste from the river.

The campaign was started on May 19, 2013, with the purpose to make the water of the Bagmati River clean and tidy.

On the first 50th week of the campaign, then-President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and other VIPs visited the Gaurighat site of the river by expressing their solidarity with the campaign.

The then Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal Leelamani Paudyal has been leading the campaign since its very beginning.

The Paudyal-led team is working on the cleanup campaign for two hours from 7:30 am on every Saturday.
Likewise, personnel of the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal, community organizations, and state bodies have also made significant contributions to making the Bagmati civilization a better place than before.

Being influenced by this noble job, sanitation, and conservation campaigns have been initiated in major cities, rivers, and cultural heritages in and out of the Kathmandu Valley. It is said that such sanitation campaigns have been carried out in more than 109 places across the country.

However, complaints have been received from a section of society on the achievements in comparison to public participation and other engagements.

Chakra Bahadur Chand, a campaigner in this move, has argued that the local government should extend its support in waste management.
