KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has commented that the government has not given priority to completing the remaining tasks of the peace process.
Addressing the program held by the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) in the capital on Sunday, the Speaker commented that the government has not prioritized the investigation of disappeared persons and the work to be carried out by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Stating that TRC and Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons Nepal have not yet completed their work, Speaker Ghimire said that the government has extended the commission’s deadline, but has not brought a concrete program to complete the work of the peace process.
The term of the commissions expired before the work was completed.
“The current government has extended the deadline of that (commission). Some time has passed since the deadline was extended. However, the work that needs to be done by forming it again and making it a body (institution) is not being done,” he said.
Speaker Ghimire added that the government is not being serious about the sufferings of the people in the war, the disabled people, and the situations where they are unable to earn a living.
Speaker Ghimire admitted that there has not been enough discussion even in the Parliament regarding the completion of the peace process.
Earlier, on July 16, 2021, the meeting of the Council of Ministers led by the then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba decided to extend the term of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Disappearance Investigation Commission and its officials by one year.
Again, although the deadline has been extended twice year, both commissions have been without officials since July 15, 2021.
The speaker criticized the government saying that even after extending the deadline of the commission, the work could not be done due to lack of officials.
