TikTok ban faces legal firestorm at SC, preliminary hearing on November 20

KATHMANDU: A preliminary hearing for the petition lodged in the Supreme Court challenging the government’s ban on the social media platform TikTok is slated for November 20.

Several writs, totaling more than half a dozen, were filed in the Supreme Court on Friday, urging the cancellation of the government’s TikTok ban.

Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, along with advocate Swagat Nepal and others, presented writ petitions arguing that the TikTok ban infringes upon citizens’ freedom of thought and expression.

Senior Advocate Tripathi confirmed that the hearing for the writ is set for Monday.

Legal practitioners are strongly contesting the government’s decision to shut down TikTok, labeling it as unlawful, unconstitutional, malicious, and arbitrary. They vehemently demand an immediate lifting of the ban on TikTok.

During the November 13 cabinet meeting, a resolution was passed to terminate the social network TikTok. The government justified its action by asserting that TikTok had become a catalyst for spreading disharmony, disorder, and chaos in society.

Nevertheless, the government’s decision has sparked controversy nationwide, drawing widespread attention and debate.
