KATHMANDU: Stakeholders have strongly asserted that the recent prohibition on the popular social network TikTok constitutes a significant infringement upon the constitutional freedom granted to citizens.
This condemnation comes in response to the government’s decision to impose a ban on TikTok usage in Nepal.
A joint statement issued by approximately 30 organizations, including the Digital Freedom Coalition, Digital Rights Nepal, Center for Media Research, and the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) characterized the government’s action as untimely and arbitrary.
They also deemed it a severe assault on the fundamental tenets of democracy, civil liberties, and the rule of law, arguing that it has resulted in a tangible weakening of these foundations.
Furthermore, the statement urged the government to reconsider its decision and explore alternative measures that would address concerns without compromising the constitutionally protected right to freedom of expression.
The organizations emphasized the importance of finding a balanced approach that respects both citizens’ digital rights and the broader principles enshrined in the Constitution.
