MPs agree to transfer ownership of impeachment pending in one parliament to another parliament

KATHMANDU: The parliamentarians, in the Drafting Committee of the House of Representatives Rules, have reached an agreement to take the pending impeachment motion to the next parliament.

In the committee meeting held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, the parliamentarians agreed that if the term of the House of Representatives is less than 5 months and the impeachment cannot be completed, the parliament that will come after the election should take the ownership of it and take ahead to conclusion.

In Tuesday’s discussion, the parliamentarians demanded that there should be a provision in the regulations to finalize the impeachment in Parliament.

The impeachment against the then Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana is still pending in the Parliament Secretariat.

In the previous parliament, the inquiry committee had recommended impeachment. There has been a confusion and uncertainty on whether the impeachment motion against Rana would be taken to the logical end. Once there is a clear provision in the regulations, the controversy about what will happen about the impeachment will get settled.

Similarly, the committee has also agreed on the proposal that the impeachment against the President and Vice President should be completed within 3 months.

Likewise, it has been agreed that the impeachment motion against the chairperson or members of the Constitutional Commission should be taken to logical end within 5 months.
