Police arrest 16 HURPES protesters demanding justice

KATHMANDU: On Friday, police apprehended 16 members of the Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) Nepal, who were staging a demonstration at the south gate of Singha Durbar.

The activists, affiliated with HURPES, organized the protest to seek justice for victims and the punishment of perpetrators in accordance with the Peace Agreement’s principles. They also called for the elimination of the public holiday commemorating “People’s War Day” and raised other demands.

According to the Kathmandu Police, several protesters were arrested when they entered a restricted area while chanting slogans.

HURPES has also been vocal in opposing the clemency granted to Yog Raj Dhakal (Regal) of Banke on the government’s recommendation, a move sanctioned by President Ram Chandra Paudel.
