Govt operating ‘fair price’ shops ahead of festivals starting today

KATHMANDU: In anticipation of the upcoming Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath festivals, the government has initiated the operation of fair-price shops starting today.

These shops, which offer essential daily goods at affordable prices, have been established at various locations nationwide.

The State-run Food Management and Trade Company, Salt Trading, and the Dairy Development Board will oversee these fair-price outlets until November 19.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies stated that these shops are being launched in response to the substantial demand for daily necessities during the festival season.

The Ministry’s goal is to combat the steep price increases of goods and ensure convenient access to essentials for the public.

The government has stepped in to operate these reasonably priced shops during festivals, as the private sector often dominates the market.

In the Kathmandu Valley, 35 locations will host these shops, including mobile outlets.

Additionally, fair-price outlets will be established in various other districts across the country.

According to Ministry Spokesperson Sharmila Neupane, the Food Management and Trade Company will open fair-price shops in 48 locations across 42 districts. Consumers will enjoy discounts, with prices set at Rs 7 per kg for rice, pulse, flour, and wheat, and a Rs 10 per kg discount on meat.

An online system will also be implemented by the company to facilitate the operation of fair price shops.
